Thoughts on HIPPA by Isatou Susso

The purpose of the Privacy Rule define and limit the circumstances where by the individual’s protected heath information may be used or disclosed by covered entities.  A covered entity as the Privacy Rule permits or requires the individual who is the subject of the information or the individual’s personal representative authorizes in writing. The Privacy Rule including who is covered, what information is protected, and how protected health information can be used and disclosed.  The Privacy Rule does not address every detail of each provision.  After reading the HIPAA Privacy Rule it provides federal protections for personal health information held by covered entities and gives patients an array of rights with respect to that information.

At the end of the reading I learned that, the Privacy Rule is balanced so that it permits the disclosure of personal health information needed for patient care and other important purposes. According to the Security Rule there are series of administrative, physical, and technical safeguards for covered entities to use to assure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information.

A case manager’s responsibilities include the following functions:
To advocacy and education patients.  Case managers coordinate and facilitate areas to monitor patients’ progress.  Case mangers examine patient files to see their level of care needed for appropriate treatment and services required by the patient.  Case managers need to find resources in the community to provide services to patients.  Case managers intervene and monitor patients performance, they also asses psychosocial needs of individuals and families. Identifying practice improvements and using evidence based data to influence needed practice changes.
